Howard J. Berman

Howard Berman is the former president and chief executive officer of The Lifetime Healthcare Companies, Inc. (formerly Excellus, Inc.), a $4.5+ billion, nonprofit health care company headquartered in Rochester, New York.

Prior to the formation of Lifetime, Mr. Berman served from 1985 as president and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of the Rochester Area. Previously, he served as group vice president of the American Hospital Association and as president of the Hospital Research and Educational Trust. He has also held administrative positions with the national BlueCross BlueShield Association and the New York City Department of Hospitals.

Since 2003 he has served on the faculty of St. John Fisher College’s Bittner School of Business as well as chair of the Center for Community Engagement at St. John Fisher College. Previously he has also been on the faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago.

Mr. Berman has written or edited five books, as well as numerous articles on health care and hospital administration as well as exhibiting metal sculpture in a juried art fair. He has also served as a member of local, regional, and national boards, including BlueCross BlueShield Association, the New York State Business Council, the Foster McGaw Prize Committee (Chair), the Metropolitan Development Association of Central New York, and the Chase Northeast Region Advisory Board and the Jewish Home of Rochester (Chair). Currently, he is the chair of the boards of the Alliance for Advancing Nonprofit Health Care and the Partnership for Nonprofit Enterprise Excellence. He is also a board member of the Holy Cross Hospital (Chicago) and the chair of the Finance Committee of the Holy Cross Hospital board.

Mr. Berman received a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Illinois, and a Masters degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
